What an ice dam actually is – and why it causes leaks
Most homeowners don't realize there's a problem until they notice water stains on an interior ceiling. By that point, the ice dam has often been forming for days or even weeks.An ice dam forms through a simple but destructive cycle. Heat escaping from your attic warms the upper part of the roof, melting the snow sitting on it. That meltwater runs down the roof slope until it reaches the colder eaves – the overhanging edge, away from the building's heat – where it refreezes. As this repeats storm after storm, a ridge of ice builds up at the edge of the roof.
Once that ice ridge forms, it acts exactly like a dam: more meltwater running down the roof has nowhere to go. Water begins pooling behind the ice, sitting against the shingles, and works its way underneath them – because shingles are designed to shed water flowing downhill, not stand in standing water. That trapped water finds its way into the roof deck, the insulation, and eventually the ceiling below. By the time you see a water stain indoors, the ice dam has usually been building for a while.
